Prestigious Wilmington, N.C., club features a highly regarded Tom Fazio-designed golf course and numerous other amenities

RALEIGH, N.C. (Sept. 23, 2020) — Raleigh-based McConnell Golf has added Porters Neck Country Club in Wilmington, N.C., to its portfolio of more than a dozen high-end, private clubs around the Carolinas and Tennessee.

Porters Neck is pristinely nestled along the Intracoastal Waterway just minutes from local beaches and historic downtown Wilmington. The club’s centerpiece is its highly regarded, Tom Fazio-designed golf course that debuted in 1991, and has played host to multiple Carolinas Golf Association and Carolinas PGA championships.

Porters Neck also offers seven lighted, Har-Tru clay tennis courts, three outdoor pools, as well as a sports complex with a fitness center and group exercise studio, indoor and outdoor dining facilities, a playground, a bourgeoning pickleball program and an active social calendar.

In the last three years, Porters Neck has added a new restaurant and lounge, four new pickleball courts and two additional tennis courts, while also converting the golf greens to Champion G12 Bermuda.

In May 2019, Porters Neck selected McConnell Golf Alliance, the private club operations division of McConnell Golf, to manage the club. With the addition of Porters Neck, McConnell Golf now owns or manages 15 golf courses in the Carolinas and Tennessee, including a trio of private, coastal golf layouts along U.S. Highway 17 — Porters Neck, as well as The Reserve and the Grande Dunes Members Club in the Myrtle Beach area.

McConnell Golf is the only individual golf course proprietor in the world that owns four Donald Ross-designed courses. The addition of Porters Neck adds a third Fazio design to the stable.

“Porters Neck Country Club is a strategic acquisition for us, as it is an ideal fit that enhances membership values for both Porters Neck members and all our McConnell Golf members,” said McConnell Golf President and CEO John McConnell. “Porters Neck has all the qualities of a first-class facility on the North Carolina coast. We see an opportunity that will enhance both the club’s and our company’s overall membership value.”

McConnell Golf’s complete portfolio — which also includes course designs by legends Pete Dye, Arnold Palmer and Greg Norman — totals 288 golf holes.

Porters Neck joins the McConnell Golf collection of private clubs offering access to prestigious facilities within the Carolinas and Tennessee, including Raleigh Country Club, Sedgefield Country Club in Greensboro, the longtime host of the PGA Tour’s Wyndham Championship, and other highly-ranked Fazio gems in Old North State Club on Badin Lake’s Uwharrie Point and Treyburn Country Club in Durham.

McConnell Golf will continue its high personalized services at Porters Neck, while incorporating the company’s vision of building “clubs of the future.”

“We are first and foremost an owner/operator that was built upon the concept of ‘pure golf for the true golfer,’ and a company that has set its vision on building clubs of the future,” said McConnell Golf chief operating officer Christian Anastasiadis. “We see things differently than other clubs or operators, focusing on the little nuances that make a trip to the club memorable for the customer.”
