Three of Top 100 instructor’s students win prominent tournaments in two-week span
BOERNE, Texas (Aug. 25, 2020) – Cordillera Ranch, the Texas Hill Country’s premier luxury and golf community, congratulates Golf Magazine Top-100 Teacher and Director of Instruction Bryan Gathright, as three of his students won prestigious tournament in a recent two-week span.
On July 18, McClure “Mac” Meissner rallied from seven shots back at the start of the final round to tie for the lead at 7-under-par and force a playoff with David Perkins at the 114th Southern Amateur Championship. Meissner, who shot rounds of 70-73-72-66–281 at Maridoe Golf Club in suburban Dallas, made par on the first playoff hole to win the championship.
At the Texas Junior Amateur on July 29, Zach Heffernan carded rounds of 66-73-70—209 (4-under-par) on the Ram Rock Course at Horseshoe Bay to successfully defend his title. Heffernan, who will attend Baylor University this fall, became the first back-to-back Texas Junior Amateur champion since Hunter Haas in 1994-95, and only the third player to accomplish this feat in the tournament’s illustrious 94-year history.
Two days later, Mitchell Meissner captured the 50th Texas State Open thanks to rounds of 67-65-63-66—261 (19-under-par) at The Cascades Club in Tyler. Mitchell, who is the older brother of Mac Meissner, plays golf right-handed but started putting left-handed in 2018 on the advice of Gathright and has excelled.

A GOLF Magazine “Top 100 Teacher in America” for the past 19 years, Gathright came to Cordillera Ranch in 2016 from San Antonio’s Oak Hills Country Club. A fixture in the Hill Country golf community. Gathright was the original director of instruction at both the La Cantera Golf Academy and the Harvey Penick Golf Academy – where he worked alongside the teaching legend for nearly three years.
Others who have flourished under Gathright’s tutelage include Jimmy Walker and Notah Begay III. Another Gathright student, Toni Hakula, won the PGA TOUR Latinoamerica’s Bupa Match Play Championship in 2018. Gathright has taught numerous PGA, Champions and LPGA Tour professionals, and over 200 high school golfers who have gone on to play collegiate golf.
