HOCKLEY, Texas (June 26, 2019) – The Clubs at Houston Oaks has announced that legendary PGA golfer Hal Sutton has been appointed Director of Golf at the club.

Sutton, who achieved 14 career victories on the PGA Tour including the 1983 PGA Championship and Tournament Players Championship, joined the Club’s management team in mid-June and has assumed leadership of all golf operations at Houston Oaks.

“Hal Sutton brings a lifetime of golf passion, knowledge and personal experiences to his new role at Houston Oaks, and we are thrilled to have him join our team,” proclaimed Chuck Watson, one of three co-owners at Houston Oaks along with Steve Alvis, John Havens and their respective spouses.

“Since he turned professional in 1981, Hal has dedicated his life’s work to the game of golf as a player, teammate, coach, captain, businessman, ambassador and philanthropist. His knowledge, love for the game and sincere desire to coach and mentor the next generation of golfer and golf professional – while serving the membership here at Houston Oaks, attracting new players to the game and helping to attract prospective new members to the Club – will be the driving forces behind his efforts.”

As a member of the Club’s senior leadership team, Sutton will serve in an executive advisory role to management and ownership regarding all business matters, including golf and club operations and capital improvements, quality and service standards, additional real estate development and planning for new facilities and recreational amenities for the Club.

Sutton’s previous experience as a player, golf course designer, real estate developer, businessman and facilities project manager make him a welcome addition to the team at Houston Oaks.

The Oaks Course, designed by Chet Williams, is currently ranked as the No. 4 golf course in Texas after debuting in the Top 100 in 2018 with a No. 22 ranking; the 18 spot jump in 2019 is the largest upward movement on the Top 50 list.

The par 71, 7,007-yard golf course, set amidst thousands of mature Live Oak trees, rolling topography and natural deep water lakes, hosts member play and programming as well as a variety of private events and amateur tournaments each year including the Big 12 Match Play Tournament.

In addition, the Club annually hosts events for the South Texas PGA and Texas Golf Association, and will host the 114th Texas Amateur Championship in 2023.

Membership at The Clubs at Houston Oaks is private and extended by invitation and referral through existing members of the Club. Please direct all membership inquiries to Ms. Lindsey Lehmann, Membership Manager, or Mr. Robert J. Gusella, CCM, CCE, the club’s CEO/GM.

The Clubs at Houston Oaks is located in Hockley, Texas on 900-plus acres of land formerly owned by Tenneco Oil & Gas Company. The campus was operated as Tenneco’s headquarters and family retreat facility in the 1950s and ‘60s, and later became Tennwood Country Club prior to its transformation into The Clubs at Houston Oaks.

Current ownership, in place since 2006, has redeveloped Houston Oaks into a premier family golf and sporting club and resort community.
