JACKSONVILLE, Florida – Bobby Weed Golf Design has completed its second renovation of the Lagoon Course at Ponte Vedra Inn & Club. Weed previously renovated the course in 2007, as well as Ponte Vedra’s other course, the Ocean Course, in 1998 and 2020.

This story was first reported by Golf Inc. magazine.

The new renovation built upon previous work to restore the design and upgrade the course’s infrastructure, turfgrass, playability and agronomy.

The course was originally designed as a nine-hole course in 1961 by Robert Trent Jones. A back nine was added in 1978 by Joe Lee, and the 2007 renovation courtesy of Weed redesigned and lengthened it to a 6,025-yard par-70 layout. Weed’s design firm has been involved with Ponte Vedra’s courses for almost 30 years.

“The Lagoon’s shorter layout, with numerous half-par holes, offers a diverse, faster playing experience that perfectly complements the bolder Ocean Course.,” Weed said.

The latest renovation made numerous improvements to the greens. They were rebuilt to meet USGA standard, grassed with TifEagle bermudagrass and restored to the original green sizes. Also, contouring was improved to accommodate modern green speeds and new irrigation surrounds were added to control and manage the watering.

Elsewhere, the tees, fairways and rough were also re-grassed; the bunkers were restored to the original flat-bottomed design and new drains, liners and sand were installed; and the practice putting green next to Hole #1 was enlarged, while the chipping green was redesigned and lowered to take advantage of the available area.

“On-going infrastructure improvements are critical to maintaining our high standards,” said Jeff Hanson, director of golf at Ponte Vedra. “We appreciate Bobby Weed Golf Design for their decades-long relationship and personal commitment to our club.”
