Beau Welling Design project renovates championship golf course among other campus-wide improvements

CORNELIUS, North Carolina – The Peninsula Club, the esteemed golf and country club located on the shores of Lake Norman just north of Charlotte, NC, is now fully operational following a comprehensive renovation project, led by the renowned full-service golf design and land planning firm Beau Welling Design.

The completed work as part of the Club’s “Next Generation Renovation Project” features significant renovations to both the 18-hole championship golf course as well as other facilities to create a new and refreshed experience for members and guests of the distinguished club.

The routing and footprint of the championship course remain largely unchanged, but several aspects of the original design have been adjusted to deliver a strategic, memorable and playable test of golf.

The renovation, led by Beau Welling and senior golf course designer Chase Webb, includes adjustments to the course strategy that encourage shot-making and creativity from tee to green to deliver a championship-caliber yet family-friendly golf experience.

Beyond the golf course renovation, BWD assisted the Club with campus planning that includes considerable golf practice area and amenity improvements. The Club’s practice areas have been expanded to include a putting course and a state-of-the-art Performance Center with two teaching bays alongside a new Golf Pro Shop (opening in December).

The previous Pro Shop is being converted to a new Co-ed Adult Lounge called The Bunker. Additionally, four new tennis courts and six pickleball courts have been added to the racquet complex. The project also includes improvements to the parking area.

“Working with The Peninsula Club over the last few years has been an honor for our team, and we’re thrilled to see these exciting capital improvements come to life and continue the Club’s legacy as one of North Carolina’s premier golf properties,” says Beau Welling, Founder and CEO of Beau Welling Design.

“The renovated golf course truly presents a strategic test of golf while remaining very enjoyable for golfers of all skill levels. Off the course, additions to the practice area and updates to other amenities provide not only world-class training facilities but also wonderful human moments of social activation for the membership, both with friends and family.”

Additional updates to the course include:

  • Regrassing of the entire course utilizing TifEagle bermudagrass on the greens and Tahoma31 bermudagrass on the rest of the course including green surrounds, fairways, rough and tees
  • Infrastructure overhaul and updates including a new state-of-the-art irrigation system, upgraded drainage and new cart paths
Strategic tree clearing for expanded sightlines across the golf course as well as to open stunning views of Lake Norman
  • Addition of a native fescue mix to out-of-play areas that provides a new feel to the course with more striking visuals while also decreasing water reliance
  • Net reduction of bunker square footage as part of a larger recalibration of bunker strategy

“When we made the decision to close the course for a year, we knew we were asking the members to make a big sacrifice,” says Jim Rogers, The Peninsula Club President. “Now that our vision is a reality, I believe everyone will feel it was worth the wait. We achieved every objective we set forth at the beginning of the project, and the final product exceeds our expectations.”

“The project team charged with the renovation of the golf course at The Peninsula Club has been as good as any I have been a part of in my 25 years in the golf industry,” says Nick Mazzella, Project Manager and Owner of the Mazzella Partnership. “Led by the direction of Beau Welling Design, the entire team collaborated from start to finish, and the golf course will be one members will be proud of for some time.”
