East Texas golfing gem test is one of Lone Star State’s best

GLADEWATER, Texas – Tempest Golf Club, the award-winning East Texas golfing gem, will play host to the historic 50th Annual Texas Four-Ball Championship, Aug. 22-24.

A total of 80 two-man teams, including several of the best amateur golfers in the state, 25 years and older, will compete in the three-day tournament in both a championship and senior division at the par 72 layout named as the No. 3 Public Course in the State by Texas Monthly.

“We’re thrilled to welcome the Texas Golf Association Four-Ball Championship to Tempest, the home of golfing champions and championships,” said Tempest Head Professional Randy Wade. “The course will be in pristine condition thanks to the hard work of course superintendent Ken Bowman. We’re elated some of the best golfers in Texas will be here to take the Tempest test.”

Tempest GC’s ninth hole

Tempest GC, which reopened in 2018 after a complete renovation by noted golf architect Jeffrey Brauer, has hosted dozens of college and amateur tournaments, including the U.S. Amateur qualifying where former Dallas quarterback Tony Romo competed.

“It’s always an honor to return the Tempest to have Texas’ finest four ball players play one of its finest courses. We want to thank everyone at Tempest Golf Club for allowing us to return and play the course once again,” said Texas Golf Association senior tournament director Chris Untiedt.

After a Thursday practice round, all three days of tournament play are free and open to the public at Tempest.

The course, named the “Best Outlying Course,” in the DFW Area by Avid Golfer Magazine, and named Top 50 in the state by the Dallas Morning News, has a course record of 65 from the back tees held by PGA Tour star Sam Burns.

A Texas Monthly story, which includes courses from all over the state, praised Tempest for, “making every hole look like a photograph in a coffee-table book.”

The lengthy story added, “The emphatic shaping of Tempest’s dramatic mounds, saddleback corridors, and spectacular greens—number sixteen resembles a heaving sea—makes it a modern, spacious American golf course that could stage a professional tournament with little additional preparation.”
