Golf fans invited to use the same putter Kathy Whitworth trusted in all 88 of her championship victories
TROPHY CLUB, Texas — On Sunday, Sept. 27, golf fans will have the rare opportunity to do exactly that during the KathyWhitworth 88 Gifting Gala at Trophy Club Golf Club.t
The putter that helped make golf history will not be displayed behind glass. It will be placed directly into the hands of guests helping carry Whitworth’s legacy forward. Each attendee participating in the Kathy Whitworth Putting Challenge may use the historic putter and capture the experience in photographs or video.
Whitworth used the same putter throughout her extraordinary professional career—including all 88 of her championship victories and 95 second-place finishes. Her 88 LPGA Tour victories remain the most by any golfer, woman or man, on a single professional tour.
The gala will be held from 4 to 7 p.m. on what would have been Whitworth’s 87th birthday. The relaxed, celebratory afternoon will include cocktails, an upscale cookout, a brief program and the putting challenge. Complimentary beer and wine will be served, with spirits available for purchase at a cash bar.
The Kathy Whitworth 88 Gifting Gala benefits the KW88 Gift Award, which provides financial assistance to promising young women who have already established themselves as professional golfers and are working to advance their careers.
Whitworth understood that journey personally. As a young professional facing the considerable cost of competition, she received crucial financial support from her parents, friends and members of her community.
Their faith gave her the time and freedom to pursue her potential. She went on to become golf’s winningest professional and the first woman to reach $1 million in career earnings on the LPGA Tour.
Throughout her life, Whitworth remained committed to encouraging and lifting up other women in golf. The KW88 Gift Award continues that commitment by helping talented young professionals meet expenses such as travel, tournament entry fees and equipment costs.
