PTI Golf Completing Turf Reduction Project For TPC Summerlin

LAS VEGAS, Nevada – TPC Summerlin is the most recent Southern Nevada golf course to undergo turf reduction in an effort to conserve water. And as with several of the others, PTI Golf was the construction company charged with completing the project.

A total of eight acres of turf was removed from holes 8, 9, 10, and 11, as well as turf from around the irrigation supply pond.

The Southern Nevada Water Authority is lowering the water budget in the Las Vegas Valley with a 33 percent reduction in allotted water. The most efficient way to meet that threshold is to remove turf.

So PTI was brought in to remove the turf and water dependent vegetation and replace it with natural desert plants and material. The nine new varieties of vegetation use only 10 percent of the water that the removed plants required.

The areas affected were well outside the playing area of the golf holes, most of them 50 yards or more from the center of the fairway.

“Other than aesthetically, golfers will not notice any change in how the golf course plays,” said PTI’s Jeremie Smith, who supervised the work. “This was a project that needed to be done and we were happy to be chosen to complete the work.”

The TPC Summerlin staff was also happy to have PTI Golf.

“We had used them previously and were very pleased with their work,” said Dale Hahn, Golf Course Superintendent at TPC Summerlin. “Jeremie and his crew are very strong. They are local, so they have the ability to quickly respond even after the project is over. And they have great communication skills.”
