Golf media star Kelly Tilghman’s fundraiser will benefit First Tee of the Coastal Carolinas

MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. (Oct. 21, 2020) – Entries are still being accepted for the third annual Mentor Challenge, golf media star Kelly Tilghman’s annual fundraising tournament to benefit the Gene’s Dream Foundation and The First Tee of the Coastal Carolinas. The 18-hole event will be held Oct. 31 at Tidewater Golf Club and the cost of entry is $600 per team.

The brainchild of Tilghman, a native of North Myrtle Beach and a pioneering television personality, the Mentor Challenge was conceived as a way to honor the late Gene Weldon, a legendary former PGA professional, and to raise money to assist junior golfers.

The event will be a four-person scramble and each player will receive his or her own cart, helping ensure a safe, socially distant environment for participants. Players will receive a gift bag that includes Sports Beats Bluetooth Earphones, a Puma golf hat, a one-month subscription to Short Par 4 golf apparel, Bridgestone golf balls, a Myrtle Beach Golf Trail Membership, and more.

“The year 2020 will forever be remembered for its hardships and challenges,” said Tilghman. “Thankfully, our beloved game has been a welcome escape from these hard times. It is widely considered to be one of the safest ways to get much needed fresh air and exercise. On Saturday, October 31, our team at the Gene’s Dream Foundation invites you to join us for a ‘charitable escape’ to bring relief to our First Tee chapter.”

Tidewater Golf Club, which features nine holes that play along either Cherry Grove Inlet or the Intracoastal Waterway, is one of the Myrtle Beach area’s premier courses. Holes 3, 4, 12 and 13 all play along Cherry Grove, highlighting a layout that has been ranked among America’s top 100 public courses by Golf Digest and Golf Magazine.

Tilghman helped found the Gene’s Dream Foundation to honor Weldon, a long-time PGA professional who mentored her en route to a standout playing career at Duke and as a famed sports broadcaster. Gene’s Dream is committed to improving the lives of children through the game of golf.
