JEFFERSON CITY, Missouri — The game of golf isn’t just thriving in Missouri — it’s driving billions into the state’s economy.
According to a new study conducted by Buffalo Groupe, golf generated an astounding $2.1 billion economic impact in 2023, the most recent year with complete data. This total reflects the sport’s wide-ranging influence, encompassing course operations, tourism, real estate, retail and charitable giving.
At the heart of this impact is nearly $1.4 billion in direct economic output, supporting over 21,700 jobs and contributing approximately $250 million in state and local tax revenues.
“The golf industry plays a meaningful role in Missouri’s economy, from supporting small businesses to welcoming visitors from across the country and world,” said Missouri Governor Mike Kehoe. “From our rural communities to our largest metro areas, golf supports jobs, drives tourism, and contributes to the strong, growing economy we’re building for Missouri’s future.”
The findings underscore golf’s growing footprint in the Show-Me State. When the last industry study was completed in 2010, the total impact stood at $1.7 billion, meaning the game’s contribution has grown by nearly 25% in just over a decade.
“This study highlights golf’s importance to Missouri’s visitor economy and the state’s overall economic health,” said Stephen Foutes, director of the Missouri Division of Tourism. “In recent years, significant investments have been made in the state’s golf industry, and this report shows those investments are paying dividends.”
Missouri’s fairways are busier than ever. In 2023, residents and visitors played an estimated 9.7 million rounds, up 39% from 2019. That growth speaks to the game’s enduring appeal and accessibility, as Missouri boasts more than 315 golf facilities, with 71% open to the public, ensuring “strong community access” statewide, according to the report.
In fact, Missouri surpasses the national average when it comes to nine-hole or shorter courses (36% versus 26%), offering players more flexibility for busy schedules while keeping the game approachable and enjoyable.

- More than 100,000 Missourians are “avid” golfers, playing over 20 rounds each year.
- Areas with the highest participation include Kansas City, St. Louis, Springfield, Branson, Lake of the Ozarks and Poplar Bluff.
- Golf-related tourism generated $232 million in direct spending, creating a total impact of $407 million and supporting over 3,800 jobs.
- Retail and wholesale golf operations generated an additional $65 million in economic activity and supported approximately 1,800 jobs.
