Golf development firm La Zagaleta has appointed Tom Doak for his first project in Spain, on the site previously known as ‘Valderrama II’ in the Sotogrande area near the country’s south coast.

This story was originally reported by Golf Course Architecture magazine.

La Zagaleta already has all the required permits to build the course, which now has the working title of Majarambuz Club. Its location is within protected land to the east of Real Club Valderrama and San Roque Club and to the north of La Hacienda Links.

The project was first presented as Valderrama II to the town hall of Castellar in 2007 with provisional approval granted a year later. In December 2015, the Valderrama Group was bought by La Zagaleta for €40 million and plans to develop a second course, hotel, and residential complex were put forward. Two years later, La Zagaleta sold Valderrama Golf Club to its members but continued with plans for the Valderrama II project.

The development, which could debut in 2024, will include “one or two championship golf courses”, according to the developers, equestrian facilities capable of hosting tournaments such as the World Equestrian Games, a luxury hotel and holiday homes.

La Zagaleta, which also owns the 36-hole La Zagaleta club near Marbella, aims to make Majarambuz one of continental Europe’s most exclusive clubs, with membership strictly limited to 300 by invitation only and guests requiring low-to-mid handicaps.

Doak is currently in progress with work on the routing.
