Norman-designed championship course in Mexico’s Riviera Maya marks the tours return to Mexico for the first time since 2017

QUINTANA ROO, Mexico  – Mayakoba, Mexico’s 595-acre legacy enclave and luxury resort destination on the Riviera Maya, announced recently that  it will host the LPGA’s Mayakoba Open from May 22-25. Celebrating its 75th year, this marks the tour’s return to Mexico after an eight-year absence.

Designed by renowned course architect and golf legend Greg Norman, Mayakoba’s El Camaleón has long served as a catalyst for propelling the sport of golf within Mexico and key stage for the country’s top golfers to showcase their talent to the world. El Camaleón will be the first golf course to host the PGA Tour, LIV Golf, LPGA, AJGA and LAAC events.

“Mayakoba and El Camaleón have a longstanding history as a trailblazer for growing golf in Mexico, from our 16-year partnership with the PGA TOUR to hosting the first-ever Latin American tournament and welcoming LIV Golf to our destination,” says Luis Durán, CEO of Mayakoba’s ownership group, RLH Properties.

“It’s an exciting time in women’s sports and a landmark year for the LPGA Tour and we are proud to be part of this extraordinary trajectory of growth and continue supporting the game in new and innovative ways at Mayakoba.”

El Camaleón was recognized as the 2024 Golf Resort of the Year at the annual Americas Awards, presented by the International Association of Golf Tour Operators (IAGTO) and continues to rank as one of the top courses in Mexico by Golf Digest and one of the Top 100 Golf Resorts in the World by GOLF Magazine.

Weaving through the distinct ecosystems of Mayakoba, including tropical jungle, dense mangroves, freshwater canals, and pristine Riviera Maya oceanfront, the course is considered one of the most diverse in the world with a variety of shot options to test players’ skills.

This iconic venue has played a pivotal role in putting Mexican golf on the global map, offering rising stars and established legends alike the chance to compete against the best in the world.

Famous golfers like Lorena Ochoa, who paved the way as a trailblazer in the sport, and contemporary stars like Abraham Ancer, Carlos Ortiz, Gaby López, María Fassi, and Isabella Fierro, have all contributed to Mexico’s growing golf legacy. Mayakoba’s El Camaleón course has been a witness to their inspiring performances, creating memorable moments that resonate with fans across the country

In 2025, Gaby López will continue her LPGA journey with full status on the professional circuit, while María Fassi and Isabella Fierro will leverage their partial and minimum status, respectively, as they work toward further opportunities via the Q Series.

This ongoing commitment to Mexican golf is a testament to the vital role Mayakoba plays in fostering the sport’s growth and inspiring future generations of players.

For nearly 20 years, Mayakoba has been a standard-bearer for luxury leisure travel on the Riviera Maya and a leader in environmental stewardship.

Nestled along the crystal-clear water of the Caribbean and the world’s second-largest barrier reef, it is considered one of the original upscale yet low-density resort developments in the region and is renowned for its connection to nature, culinary excellence, acclaimed spas, culturally inspired programming and recreational pursuits.
