Tempest Golf Club continues to pile up statewide acclaim, from unranked to No. 42 in Texas
GLADEWATER, Texas (May 18, 2021) — Tempest Golf Club, the 2018 renovation layout by architect Jeffrey Brauer, continues to pick up more statewide honors for its outstanding combination of East Texas wooded beauty and challenge.
It recently became the only course in Texas, public or private, to go from unranked to Top 50 in the state in the 2021 Dallas Morning News statewide rankings.
Located just outside of Gladewater, but still undiscovered by many Texas golfers, it leaped into the 42th spot among more than 800 Texas golf courses after not being ranked at all last year. The Tempest is the highest ranked public course in East Texas, the fourth highest course with public access in all of Texas.
“We’re certainly thrilled that so many golfers and golf raters are discovering what we have felt since opening the Jeffrey Brauer designed course in 2018. This is the best golf in East Texas and a true hidden golfing gem in our area and our state,” said Tempest Director of Golf Randy Wade.
“To be ranked in the top 50 in only our third year means that the many improvements we’ve made and are continuing to make are paying off.”
Last year, Tempest was the No. 2 best new course in Texas which led to the Top 50 ranking this year. Of the top 50 courses rated in the state by the Morning News annual survey, the only statewide poll in Texas, only the City of Arlington-owned Texas Rangers Golf Club, which recently hosted a PGA Tour Korn Ferry Tour event, is ranked one spot higher. Two others offered limited access through a resort.
“There has been a so much hard work put in by some many people, especially course superintendent Steven Killingsworth, and his hard-working staff, it’s gratifying to see that recognized on statewide basis,” Wade added.
East Texas golf legend Roy Pace recently began to offer some lessons at the Tempest along with Wade, who founded Randy’s Junior Golf Academy in 2011. There is a newly renovated practice area at Tempest along with a new, large putting green adjacent to the modern clubhouse.
It features Neptune’s Grille & Bar for food of all kinds along with meeting space and a lively 19th hole to celebrate or commiserate any round at the Tempest.
A huge American Flag and Flagpole was dedicated behind the ninth green in 2020. The course is owned by Joe Bruno, a New Orleans-based attorney, and offers a family-style atmosphere for golf with nearby lodging.
