Follows in the tradition of Jones Cup Invitationals

SEA ISLAND, GA (Dec. 24, 2020) – In keeping with its deep commitment to amateur golf, Sea Island resort recently announced the creation of the Sea Island Women’s Amateur. Patterned after the highly successful Jones Cup Invitational tournaments at Sea Island and Ocean Forest Golf Club, which began in 2001, the Women’s Amateur is expected to follow the Jones Cup tradition of drawing the nation’s best female golfers to the world-class setting of Sea Island.

The inaugural event is set for July 27-29, 2021.

“With Sea Island’s strong commitment to amateur golf and hosting multiple amateur championships over the years, creating the Sea Island Women’s Amateur was an important and natural next step, one that we are very pleased to be taking,” said Brannen Veal, Director of Golf.  “This opportunity will give the best female golfers a stage on which to showcase their talents.”

The 54-hole tournament will be held on Seaside, Sea Island’s signature course, with a field limited to 84 players. Routinely ranked among the top 100 courses in the country, Seaside, along with Plantation Course, is the home of the PGA TOUR’s RSM Classic, a FedEx cup event.

The ocean-side links course was first designed by Harry S. Colt and Charles Alison in 1929, and redesigned in 1999 by Tom Fazio, who blended it with the former Marshside Course.

In addition to the Jones Cup Junior and Senior Tournaments, Sea Island has hosted multiple amateur championships over the years, including four Georgia State Amateur Championships, eight USGA championships (Senior Women’s, Senior Amateur, and Mid-Amateur), the Western Junior, the Canon Cup, two UBS Cups, and nine LPGA Ladies Open Invitationals.

The Southeastern Conference Championship has been contested 16 times on Sea Island’s Seaside course.  For decades, Sea Island was also home to Louise Suggs, LPGA co-founder and winner of the 1949 British Ladies Amateur and the first Sea Island Ladies Open Invitation in 1954.

The Sea Island Women’s Amateur is open to any female amateur player of any age.  Registration will begin in April via the tournament website (www.seaislandwomensamateur.com) and close on June 18.  Further details are available on the web site.
