CHARLOTTE, NORTH CAROLINA  – PGA TOUR Commissioner Tim Finchem and Quail Hollow Club President Johnny Harris are pleased to announce an agreement between the two organizations that names Quail Hollow Club as the host site for The Presidents Cup 2021.  The partnership brings this prestigious, international, team match-play event into the Southeastern United States for the first time in what will be its 27-year history in 2021.

Quail Hollow Club will be the fifth golf course in the United States to host the prestigious team match-play competition, joining Robert Trent Jones Golf Club in Prince William County, Va., (1994, 1996, 2000, 2005), TPC Harding Park in San Francisco, Calif., (2009, 2025); Muirfield Village Golf Club in Dublin, Ohio (2013); and Liberty National, Jersey City, N.J. (2017).

International sites for The Presidents Cup include The Royal Melbourne Golf Club in Melbourne, Victoria, Australia (1998, 2011); The Links at Fancourt, George, South Africa (2003); The Royal Montreal Golf Club in Montreal, Quebec, Canada (2007), and Jack Nicklaus Golf Club Korea in Songdo IBD, Incheon City, Korea, which will host The Presidents Cup 2015 for the first time in Asia, October 6-11.

International sites for the 2019 and 2023 Presidents Cup have yet to be announced.

“We’re thrilled to add Quail Hollow Club to the growing list of exceptional venues to host The Presidents Cup,” said Finchem.  “Charlotte is a major hub of business in the Southeastern United States with a growing economy and broad base of sports fans, and The Presidents Cup matches perfectly as we look to bring it to exciting, emerging markets and allow a new fan base to experience the competition, pageantry and international goodwill that the event represents.  Quail Hollow Club has been a player favorite since the PGA TOUR returned there in 2003, and we’re confident players, fans and sponsors from around the world will find Charlotte, the Carolinas and the course itself a remarkable setting for The Presidents Cup.

“I’d like to thank Johnny Harris, who played a key role to attracting the PGA TOUR back to Charlotte in 2003, and the Quail Hollow Club membership for their support and partnership.  It’s obvious this club has high expectations and wants to deliver the world’s best to the Carolinas. We will certainly help them achieve that goal with The Presidents Cup 2021.”

Quail Hollow Club is considered by many to be one of the finest courses in the Southeastern United States.  The course was originally designed by famed golf course architect George Cobb in 1961 to capture the beauty as well as challenging terrain of the Piedmont region. In the intervening years, the course has undergone a series of improvements, including modifications to several holes by Arnold Palmer in 1986 and a redesign by Tom Fazio in 1997.

Quail Hollow Club hosted the Kemper Open from 1969-79 and has hosted the PGA TOUR’s Wells Fargo Championship since 2003, one of the largest, most prestigious sporting events in the Charlotte region.  In 2017, Quail Hollow Club will host the PGA Championship, the first major championship for the venue (the Wells Fargo Championship will be held at Eagle Point Golf Club in Wilmington, N.C., that year).

A similar arrangement was announced last summer, in which TPC Harding Park will host the 2020 PGA Championship prior to The Presidents Cup being staged there in 2025.

“Being chosen by the PGA TOUR to host The Presidents Cup 2021 is a dream come true,” said Harris.  “Our membership is proud of all we’ve accomplished with the Wells Fargo Championship over the years, helping to impact the history of the sport here in the Carolinas, and the continual improvements we’ve made have allowed us to attract the best players in the world, the PGA Championship and now The Presidents Cup.  We look forward to doing everything we can to make this an unforgettable event for not only fans from Charlotte and the Carolinas, but those who embrace The Presidents Cup from around the world.”

“Golf is an important part of North Carolina’s economy and quality of life,” said Governor Pat McCrory, North Carolina.  “Through this tournament, we will once again be able to showcase the beauty and opportunity that attract people to our state from around the world.  Building on the  experience we gained hosting successful back-to-back U.S. Opens, our public safety officials, economic development and tourism teams and the administration at large look forward to working with the PGA TOUR to prepare for The Presidents Cup, and we thank them for bringing this prestigious tournament to Charlotte.”

“It truly is a great day in South Carolina when we welcome The Presidents Cup to the area,” said Governor Nikki Haley, South Carolina.  “The tournament will have a tremendous impact on the economy and give us another opportunity to show the world why the Carolinas are not only top tourist and golf destinations—they are also great places to raise a family and grow a business.”

Past winners of the PGA TOUR events held at Quail Hollow Club include: Dale Douglass (1969); Dick Lotz (1970); Tom Weiskopf (1971, 1973, 1977);  Doug Sanders (1972); Bob Menne (1974);  Raymond Floyd (1975); Joe Inman (1976); Andy Bean (1978); Jerry McGee (1979); David Toms (2003); Joey Sindelar (2004); Vijay Singh (2005); Jim Furyk (2006); Tiger Woods (2007); Anthony Kim (2008); Sean O’Hair (2009); Rory McIlory (2010); Lucas Glover (2011); Rickie Fowler (2012); Derek Ernst (2013); and J.B. Holmes (2014).

About The Presidents Cup

The Presidents Cup, a team match play competition featuring 24 of the world’s top golfers – 12 from the United States and 12 from around the world, excluding Europe – is held every two years, and since 1996 has alternated between United States and international venues. The Presidents Cup was developed to give the world’s best non-European players an opportunity to compete in international team match-play competition. The U.S. Team has won eight of the 10 previous Presidents Cups, and the only outright win by the International Team came at the 1998 event in Melbourne. A historic 17-17 tie came in 2003 when the event was held in South Africa.

The Presidents Cup is a unique golf event in that there is no purse or prize money; instead, each player, captain and captain’s assistant allocates an equal portion of the funds generated to charities of his choice. Since the inception of The Presidents Cup in 1994, more than $32 million has been raised for charity from event proceeds, including more than $5 million from The Presidents Cup 2013. Over the past 20 years, The Presidents Cup has impacted more than 450 charities in 15 countries worldwide and 35 states in the U.S.

Rolex and Citi are the exclusive Global Partners of The Presidents Cup.
